Where did you get the maps and are they accurate?
The original artwork for the pin maps was done by Kenneth Townsend and Ellen Kuzdro. They are archived in the Library of Congress, Geography and Map Division. The maps are hand-shaded, which sets them apart as an art form from digitally-shaded relief maps, commonly in use. I created the pin map set using current GIS data, which added layers of information and details. You can use them with confidence that they are not only beautiful works of art, but are up-to-date and geographically correct.
What type and size pins do I need? Where can I purchase the quilting pins?
The quilting pins are not included and are not available for purchase on pinitmaps.com. You need to purchase size 28: 1-3/4 inch straight quilting pins. The correct size of pin is important for the plastic flag poles and bases to fit properly. The Dritz quilting pins with the yellow plastic ball head work best and they are widely available. You can purchase them from amazon.com, Walmart or your local hobby store. The maps can be used with or without pins. Younger children will enjoy laying the labels on the map and using it as a play mat for their miniature animals.
Are the flag labels cut or do I need to cut them myself?
The flag labels and national flags are cut and included in every map set, making them easy to assemble. They are professionally printed on heavy 16 pt. cardstock and UV coated, making them stiff and durable.
Q: How do I assemble the pin flags?
1. Using 1 inch of the Transparent Scotch tape, adhere the flag label to the tape half-way across the front of label. Lay the pin next to the label on the tape. Fold the tape over, so half of the tape is on top and half is on bottom.
2. Slide the clear plastic tube on the pin.
3. Place the silicon flag base on the foam sheet and push the pin through the silicon base. The straight pin easily pushes through the soft silicon, creating the hole in the center.
An instruction sheet with pictures is included with each map set.
How long does it take to assemble the pin flags?
The flags are quick and easy to assemble. The time varies per map, because they each have a different number of flags. The pin flags for Europe take about 2 hours to assemble and the pin flags for Central America can be done in 45 minutes. You can assemble the pin flags for the entire world set over one weekend.
How much of the pin is exposed beneath the flag base for pinning?
If you use size 28: 1-3/4 inch straight pins, you will have 5/16 inch of the pin exposed beneath the flag base. It is a little shorter than the shaft of a push pin.
