Yes, both you and your guest can connection to the conversation in any of our apps: RINGR Mobile Android, RINGR Mobile iOS and RINGR Desktop in either Firefox or Chrome. We hope to add support for the MS Edge and Safari browsers soon (although for Safari we are waiting for some missing WebRTC features to be added to the browser before we can support it).
Can I use RINGR to call a cell phone or skype account?
Theres no need to use your cell phone line or Skype account - RINGR will place your call for you. Both ends of the conversation need to install or access a RINGR app, either RINGR mobile for iOS or Android or RINGR desktop (which runs in Firefox or Chrome browsers and doesn't require an installation).
Instructions on how to connect are given to your invitees in their invite email. They won't need to create an account as the invite code/link sent to them will put them straight into a call with you.
How do I make an international call with RINGR?
When you make a call in RINGR we connect you via Voice-over-IP (VoIP) just like a Skype call or Facetime etc.. We do NOT use your cell phone number, rather you'll be able to send an invite to your partner's email address that will contain a unique code and link that will allow them to join the call via their desktop web browser (Chrome or Firefox) or via one of our mobile apps (iOS or Android). Links to access RINGR on the web or via one of the mobile apps are provided in the invite email. Hence, you should be able to connect with a participant on the other side of the world quite happily, as long as you both have a reasonably good internet connection.
If you like to do a quick trial run, send yourself (or a friendly volunteer) an invite and you should be able to try a call between your own web browser and your mobile device.
There are whooshing or tinkling sounds in the background of my recording
RINGR uses a custom levelling and background noise cancellation procedure that improves the quality of the vast majority of conversations.
However, in some rare cases very noisy recordings can be left with audible artefacts afterwards. In these cases, RINGR premium users can use the 'add format' button to add and download an individual tracks version for editing or may find that the Raw version (which does not have our noise-cancellation system applied to it) sounds more natural.
RINGR Basic users will need to contact RINGR support to access raw recordings for a conversation with noise cancellation issues.
What audio file format should I download?
RINGR Premium provides a number of options for output file types, compressed using 3 different codecs. Which you should choose depends on what you intend to do with the file:
Pros: supported almost everywhere
Cons: introduces some audio artefacts at lower bitrates, can sound a little 'tinny' at times
Pros: Sounds loads better than MP3 for the same files size, open source/free, supported by most editing softwares, better supported than FLAC
Cons: Not quite as widely supported as MP3 (but works on almost all phones and browsers)
Pros: Lossless (identical to the WAV file but less than half the size), open source/free, supported by most audio editing softwares - an ideal transfer format

Cons: Not supported by most browsers and requires a plugin to playback, larger file sizes than MP3/Ogg
YOU SHOULD ALSO CONSIDER THE COMPRESSION LEVEL OR BITRATE: The higher the bitrate the better the quality. However, if the user is on a low bandwidth connection then a higher bitrate may mean delays or buffering periods, negatively affecting their listening experience. Mobile users may also chew through their data allowance quicker.
Experiment with different bitrates and quality settings and find the lowest setting that still sounds great - your listeners will thank you for it! Speech is very compressible (compared to polyphonic music) so expect to use lower bitrates than you would for music - also if it's a mono recording you can reduced bitrate again compared to a stereo recording.
If you think you might have audio artefacts in your recording introduced by our post-processing (which auto-levels the participants and reduces background noise in recordings before merging them) please try downloading the raw, unprocessed recordings and review those.
